Public Schools and Prayer Two booklets about handling religion in public schools are being distributed to some 50,000 teachers by the Alabama Education Association to dispel the notion that the Bible and prayer are not allowed in public schools.
"The Bible and Public Schools" and "A Teacher's Guide to Religion in Public Schools" — produced by the First Amendment Center — advise an academic rather than a devotional approach to religion.
The center says the booklets are based on 1999 federal guidelines that were endorsed by civil liberties and educational organizations and were sent by President Clinton to every U.S. public school district. .......................................................................................................................... Guitarist Brian "Head" Welch was baptized in the Jordan river after quitting his band and drugs.
March 6, KIBBUTZ KINNERET, Israel. Former Korn Guitarist Baptized in the Jordan River Ex-metal guitarist Brian "Head" Welch was baptized Saturday in the Jordan river, just weeks after quitting his band, drug habits and rock-and-roll lifestyle for religion. Welch, a founding member of the multi-platinum metal band Korn, joined some 20 other white-robed Christian pilgrims from a Bakersfield, California, church who were immersed by their pastor, Ron Vietti, in the cool, gray waters near the shore.
Despite saying he was there to be "dunked in the water," Welch said the ritual baptism had washed away his anger. "You know when you get angry and it builds up? I felt like hurting someone before, now I feel like hugging people," he said.
Wearing a silver cross necklace and earring, Welch, with "Matthew 11:28," tattooed prominently across his neck in reference to a Bible verse stood out from his fellow pilgrims.
Pastor Vietti said Welch, who also has "Jesus" tattooed across his knuckles, is already attracting a new group of young people to the message of Christianity.
"Because music is such a big thing in the world, Brian has natural avenue for sending a message. In recent weeks people have committed their lives to God because they're so inspired by his story... They think there's fire in him," Vietti said.
Welch is one of thousands of pilgrims baptized annually in the revered river. According to Biblical tradition, John the Baptist baptized Jesus in the Jordan River. Baptism is a Christian sacrament marked by ritual use of water to admit and purify a new or rededicated Christian.
After 13 years with the band - and the rock-and-roll lifestyle - Welch said he has become increasingly depressed and drug-addicted in recent years. The band announced his resignation Feb. 22.
"Everything that people think a rock band sees and goes through, multiply that by 10," Welch said. "The drugs and everything you can imagine, I've got to get rid of it, man. It wasn't me."
Welch said he has finally ended a dependency on methamphetamines and other drugs. He said he had been ready to give up on life after several addiction treatment programs did not help him, until turning his life to God allowed him to quit.
Welch said he has been angry for more than two years and that it has negatively affected everyone close to him. "My managers at Korn, I've been tormenting them for the last couple of months," he explained. "They thought I was mad at them but I'm not. It's something inside me spiritually that needs to be fixed."Welch said he plans to release music and help kids. "My songs are God saying things to me, him talking to people. He's going to use me to heal people and people are going to be drawn to it, just watch, they will be."
Korn's self-titled 1994 debut was heralded for its haunting, edgy songs. Music critics and fans attributed much of Korn's unique sound to Welch and fellow guitarist James "Munky" Shaffer. During the 1990's, the group climbed to the top ten of almost every alternative/rock station in the U.S. and Europe.
Their sixth and final album with Welch, "Take a Look in the Mirror," was released in 2003.

MARCH 4TH, MONTGOMERY, AL. REDEEM THE VOTE ALABAMA LAUNCHES EDUCATIONAL CAMPAIGN More images here
 Youth Leader K.P. Westmoreland
February 28th, 2005, Nashville, TN. Nationally known youth leader and evangelist, K.P. Westmoreland, will be the keynote speaker at a luncheon in Montgomery announcing the launch by Redeem The Vote Alabama, a major initiative to encourage Alabama teens to stay in school.
The luncheon will be held at noon at the RSA Plaza Terrace in Montgomery for Christian radio and media as well as the general public to become familiar with the message -- "Education -- It's Not A Choice, It's A Commandment", -- the slogan being adopted to represent the statewide public service campaign.
The initiative was recently announced by Dr. Randy Brinson, founder of Redeem The Vote, the national organization that played a dramatic role in the 2004 mobilization of young people of faith to register to vote in the 2004 Presidential elections. An Alabama native, Dr. Brinson has been a long time advocate of education both statewide and nationally.
He also noted that prayer will be a strong element of the campaign. "We want to commit to pray for and celebrate all our schools and all teachers including public schools, private and parochial and home schoolers. All are a vital part of the fabric of our well being as a nation under God," noted Dr. Brinson.
K.P Westmoreland and his wife, Teri, founded Westmoreland Ministries in 1995 in full time pursuit of their mission of communicating the gospel. He annually travels the world delivering the message of hope and freedom in Jesus Christ to thousands of young people and adults through music festivals, tours, conferences, retreats, youth rallies, church services, school assemblies and radio and television interviews. The author of the book The Quest: Your Role In God's Epic Story, the Oklahoma based evangelist-speaker has been spotlighted by Dr. James Dobson's Focus On The Family ministry--including guesting on their nationally syndicated radio program Life On the Edge Live.
Following his keynote address in Montgomery, K.P.Westmoreland will be in Auburn, Alabama for a Salvation Army youth event being held Friday evening through Sunday morning, March 4th thru 6th, at the Auburn Hotel and Convention Center.
The educational initiative of Redeem The Vote Alabama leans heavily on the importance of biblical mandates and the role of education in the future of America. In research during the 2004 presidential campaign, Redeem The Vote national campaign staff found that high school drop-outs are less likely to register and participate in the political process. Alabama has one of the nation's highest high school drop-out rates. Under the banner"Education--It's Not A Choice, It's A Commandment," Redeem The Vote Alabama will ramp up an aggressive statewide campaign which will include public service announcements and appearances by some of the top Christian music artists and speakers in the nation.
RSA Plaza Terrace, site of Friday's noon luncheon, is located at 770 Washington Avenue in Montgomery. Directions and further information are available by calling: (334) 269-6090.
Redeem The Vote is a non-profit, non-partisan organization committed to increasing voter participation among young voters of faith and providing educational forums on issues pertinent to their lives. Redeem The Vote Alabama is the first of what is expected to be many such initiatives to be undertaken in other states across America.

November 21, 2004- Montgomery, AL- THE FRAGILE COALITION, a Redeem the Vote Perspective on the election.
Over the last 2 weeks, a number of opinions have been issued by a variety of groups, particularly evangelicals, about their roles in the re-election of George W. Bush and the increase in the majorities in both the House of Representatives and the US Senate. Over the weekend, Senator John Kerry weighed in as well, claiming that Fox News and the conservative talk radio networks had given the President a distinct advantage over him with regard to getting his message out to the voters.
Redeem the Vote, a non-partisan voter registration and mobilization organization recently participated in an election forum with the Pew Research Foundation and other youth-oriented voter registration groups at American University in Washington, DC. The results of exit polling and focus groups indicated a variety of reasons for the voter turnout favoring Republicans other than have been initially suggested in the media. While a number of concerns had a direct impact on voter sentiment, moral concerns ranked highest among all groups polled, including the youth vote, followed by the war in Iraq, terrorism, health care, and education.
The moral concerns, while discussed most prominently among evangelicals, fueled voter turnout among other groups as well, particularly among conservative Jews, Catholics, and women of all faiths. In fact, the greatest increase in percentage vote came from groups not typically aligned with evangelical groups, particularly the Catholic and Hispanic vote.
Ray Flynn, former mayor of Boston and former UN ambassador to the Vatican, states clearly that this coalition of people of faith is an important voting block that cannot be taken for granted by either party. A lifelong Democrat, Flynn states the lack of attention to the Catholic vote on moral issues resulted in an historic shift among Catholics toward the Republican Party. Nationally, 49 % of Catholics voted for President Bush, an increase of 17 % over the election of 2000. In the key state of Ohio, 55 % of Catholics voted for Bush, with those who attended mass weekly voting 65% for President Bush. Also, a majority of women voted for the President in Ohio, with a 5% increase overall compared to the 2000 election.
Dr. Randy Brinson, founder and chairman of Redeem the Vote, states that this “fragile coalition” can be a model for future legislative and policy initiatives if approached properly. “ The election of 2004 represented a ‘perfect storm’, in a political sense. With the outrageous behavior of the Super Bowl, coupled with the homosexual community’s attempt to redefine marriage, sexual exploitation of women, and lack of media standards of decency brought a sense of urgency to find the country’s moral compass.
“At the same time, Mel Gibson’s The Passion awakened many in the country to the role of sacrifice, depicted powerfully in Jesus Christ, and how that sacrifice changed the world forever. This “role” caused many Americans take stock of their lives, look at the moral abyss of the country through the eyes of Christ and decide that they, too, should take a stand on issues important to them, particularly moral ones.
“Our own data confirmed that it was a turning of the country in a new direction, unencumbered by any one particular faith or denomination, but by the need to define our priorities in moral terms, whether it be marriage, family, community, education, standards of decency, or protection of life.
“This fragile coalition must be nurtured and communicated to by members of both parties, Democrats and Republicans, with issues defined beyond typical partisan battles. The end result is that all Americans are celebrated, with the message that each of us have God given talents, gifts and abilities that must be allowed to flourish. Furthermore, all Americans, those of faith and those of no particular faith, must bind together and reconcile to move beyond the divide that is so often exploited.
Note: Dr Randy Brinson and his wife Pam, founded Redeem the Vote in December 2003. During the last 8 months, their organization mobilized thousands of evangelicals, youth, Catholics, and Jewish organizations through the internet, concerts, Christian music festivals, and video emails with Christian artists and Jim Caviezel, star of the Passion of the Christ. It is estimated that over 2.5 million voters were moved to participate in the election through the RTV media and Internet campaign.

NEWS FLASH!
The month prior to the election, RTV was busy in the key battleground state of Ohio. Many credit this strategic effort as having been crucial to the voter turnout in those counties of Ohio.
- The month before the election, RTV artist spokespersons Building 429 and Mark Schultz performed six concerts in five cities in the state, including Mansfield, Zanesville, Mt Gilead, Dayton (2) and Findlay. At each event, the artists encouraged voter registration and participation. - 21 radio stations were contacted with RTV information. As a last minute push on Monday, 11/1, Building 429 artist Jason Roy, was interviewed on five Christian radio stations encouraging voter turnout the following day. - 125 churches in Ohio were e-mailed RTV information encouraging voting registration among their congregations. - As a result of those contacts, 75 churches requested Redeem The Vote voter registration packets and 9 churches requested the artist video PSA to play in their services. - 940 names from Ohio were captured on the RTV e-mail list and sent updated News Flashes and the Jim Caveziel e-mail video. - Along with these 940 names, the Jim Caveziel e-mail video was also sent to 650,000 people in Ohio.

Young People take on the election
Randy Brinson was on C-SPAN last evening as part of a panel sponsored by American University in Washington, D.C. titled “Young People Take on the Election." They discussed Campaign 2004 and young people’s views of the campaign, the results, voter-registration drives, media coverage and the burning question, did young people turn out to vote. The panel consisted of:
Randy Brinson, founder and chairman, Redeem the Vote; Adrienne Maree Brown, author and program director for League of Young Voters; Scott Keeter, director of survey research, Pew Research Center for the People & the Press; Ian Rowe, vice president for strategic partnerships and public affairs, MTV’s Choose or Lose.
American University Professor and Fox News contributor, Jane Hall, served as the moderator for the evening. The discussion lasted an hour, including time for questions from the audience. Randy did a great job and fielded more questions from the students than any other panelist. A number of the Washington press was there, as well.
The program was also broadcast live on NPR via their Washington affiliate, WAMU-FM, which co-sponsored the event. It is scheduled to re-air later this week on C-SPAN.

Wednesday, November 03, 2004, WASHINGTON DC. Voters Turn Out in Droves — Driven by an intense race for the presidency, a greater percentage of Americans voted Tuesday than at any time in more than three decades. About 120 million people cast ballots, or just under 60 percent of eligible voters — the highest percentage turnout since 1968, said Curtis Gans, director of the nonpartisan Committee for the Study of the American Electorate. He expected more detailed figures later Wednesday. One county clerk in Illinois spoke for poll workers across the country saying 54 percent of eligible voters, or about 105.4 million, voted.President Clinton's 1996 re-election bid drew just 49 percent of eligible voters, about 96.3 million. But his 1992 challenge to the first President Bush brought out 55.2 percent of eligible voters, or about 104.4 million.Officials had eyes on whether Tuesday's turnout would rival the 1960 benchmark, when about two-thirds of eligible voters came out to back either Democrat John Kennedy or Republican Richard Nixon (search). At least six states — Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia — and the District of Columbia set new voter-turnout highs, according to Gans' analysis."On both sides, the presidency of George Bush was a lightning rod," he said. "For those who supported him, they supported him for traditional values, strong leadership, the war on terrorism and some rejection of things that the Democrats advocate," such as abortion rights and gay civil unions."On the other side, it was the war on Iraq, debt, the feeling he hadn't been candid with the American people, too conservative values and division in the country," Gans said. When it comes to voting, the United States still has some distance to go to match the participation of voters in other democracies. But by U.S. standards, Tuesday shaped up as an impressive show.In California, the estimated voter turnout was 12 million, a record for the state."It's a landslide of people coming out, which is nice," voter Theresa Cocco, 45, a business owner, said outside the Surfing Museum in Huntington Beach. "It renews my faith in society."
.......................................................................................................................... Newsflash! 42,000 VOTER REGISTRATIONS DOWNLOADED VIA "REDEEM THE VOTE" SITE
With tomorrow’s Presidential election upon us, REDEEM THE VOTE’s voter registration download count totaled approximately 42,000, making it one of the largest faith-based voter registration efforts in the nation this election year. As a result, Redeem The Vote has garnered much media attention, most recently last week with Christian music artists Point of Grace and Building 429 featured in stories on CNN and “Nightline.”
Over 40 Christian artists and Hollywood actor JIM CAVEZIEL voiced Redeem The Vote PSA's which were aired on hundreds of Christian radio stations nationwide and sent as e-mail videos.
Christian Radio accounted for the bulk of those downloads as hundreds of individual stations and major networks such as K-LOVE, AIR 1, American Family Radio, Christian Hit Radio Satellite Network (WAY-FM), HIS Radio Network, Northwestern Radio Network and others participated in the campaign.
Of those 42,000 downloads, almost one fourth were driven to the Redeem the Vote web site by Christian music networks K-LOVE and AIR 1, both owned and operated by the Educational Media Foundation, Sacramento, CA. Dick Jenkins, President of EMF Broadcasting said “Selecting the man who will lead this nation for the next four years is one of the most important civic acts as citizens that we can perform. I am excited… no ELATED by the number of listeners who have registered to vote as a direct response to registration announcements aired on the K-LOVE and Air 1 Networks.”
With more than an estimated 44 million voters of faith who were counted as silent in the last Presidential election, REDEEM THE VOTE organizers were committed to registering new voters and mobilizing those who needed encouragement to get out to the polls and have their voices heard.

October 15, 2004, KENTWOOD, Mich. In Praise Of Voting
If MTV's Rock the Vote is the secular granddaddy of youth voting campaigns, then Redeem the Vote - which Building 429 and a long list of Christian bands are touring in support of this election season - might be thought of as its churchgoing, evangelical progeny.
Rock 'n' roll has long been linked with progressive politics and flaunting authority, but Redeem the Vote, started this year, hopes for a different kind of relationship. It seeks to transform a trinity of concertgoing youths, evangelical Christian beliefs and faith-based politics into election-year defeats of those who want to "remove the acknowledgement of our Godly heritage from our public square."SEE ARTICLE
